Country hotel invests in the first wood gasifying biomass boiler in UK
The Ty Newydd Country Hotel has invested more than £100,000 in a state-of-the-art wood gasifying biomass boiler system. The investment has been supported by a grant from the Wood Energy Business Scheme (WEBS), established by Forestry Commission Wales on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government, and an interest-free loan from the Carbon Trust.
The boilers will provide for all of the hotel’s heating requirements as well as delivering high-pressure and on demand hot water. The boilers are manufactured by Strebel Ltd, part of the Strebelwerk group - an established forerunner in the supply of high-quality products to the heating industry. These wood gasifying boilers are the first of this type of log-burning boiler to be supplied by Strebel in the UK. CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere are typically reduced by 90%.
Ty Newydd proprietor Mr Hillier said: “This investment is an integral part of the hotel’s environmental practice. The fact that the boiler operates a completely carbon neutral process is really important to us.”The Ty Newydd Country Hotel was built in the 1930s and has seen many developments since its construction.
Bedroom wings, function rooms, a restaurant and conservatories have all been added to the original building to keep up with its customers’ demands. Former member of the British Olympic culinary team Lee Modrate has been appointed head chef and is supported by three full-time classically trained chefs. Concentrating on weddings and corporate events, the last 12 months have seen revenue grow by more than 25%, which is predicted to increase by a further 10-15% in 2008.
The investment in the biomass boilers means the Ty Newydd Country Hotel is helping the Government meet its target under the Kyoto protocol to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 12.5% below 1990 levels by 2008-2012.”Being on the edge of the Brecon Beacons, we are in arguably the most beautiful part of Wales,” Mr Hillier said.
“Our new environmentally-friendly system means we can encourage more tourists to experience the area’s diversity, rich and varied heritage and great scenery, without damaging it.”
